Supercell Tornado

“Focus on the things that will help to keep your household functioning, as severe storms can bring on disruption in varying degrees," said Tom Bingham, director of marketing for Gold Eagle Co.

Every year, more than 1,000 tornados* touch down across the country wreaking havoc and destruction on just about everything in their path. Severe storm and tornado season has begun in many areas of the country, and these natural occurrences are unavoidable and in most cases unpredictable. STA-BIL® Fuel Stabilizer, the leading brand of fuel stabilizers and ethanol treatments, and Bobby Cleveland, Gold Eagle’s very own Engine Answerman™, have teamed up to share tips and advice to help consumers weather these potentially disastrous storms.

“While you can’t be fully prepared for what may come, one thing is for certain. Severe storms frequently result in a loss of power, and sometimes it means days or weeks without electricity, as we saw in the Northeast due to Hurricane Sandy,” said Tom Bingham, director of marketing for Gold Eagle Co, the makers of STA-BIL brand products. “Focus on the things that will help to keep your household functioning, as severe storms can bring on disruption in varying degrees. By focusing on the type of disruptions that can happen and planning from there, you will be better prepared overall. One more note, when using equipment ALWAYS follow the manufacturer’s safe operating instructions!”

RESTORING POWER
It is always a good idea to have a back-up generator in the result of a power outage. Generators not only keep the lights on but also power up essential appliances. In addition to having a generator on hand, it is even more essential to make sure it is in good working order, and following are some tips to make sure your generator is working at its best in case of the worst:

  • Keep the generator off the floor to avoid water that might occur from flooding
  • Check the spark plugs each season to make sure they are clean and properly gapped
  • Make sure the oil is fresh and full
  • Clean out or change the air filter to ensure it works properly
  • Fill it up with fresh gas and add a fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer to keep the gas fresh for up to a year

REMOVING THE WRECKAGE
Along with high winds often comes downed trees and wreckage. To help clear up the mess in the aftermath, it’s a good idea to have a chainsaw available to cut through the debris that may collect in the driveway or yard. The following tips help ensure a chainsaw stays in working order:

  • Keep the chainsaw clean and properly stored until needed
  • Put it in a safe, yet easily accessible location so there is no need to dig for it during the chaos
  • Keep 2-cycle oil, a full can of stabilized gas and chain oil handy for quick response to downed trees or branches

WASHING AWAY DEBRIS
After a severe thunderstorm, tornado or microburst hits, there may be a lot of clean up ahead. Dirt and debris may be covering the outside of homes and surrounding areas. Having a pressure washer on hand will help clean things up a lot quicker and easier. The following are some ways to maintain your gasoline powered pressure washer:

  • Make sure the air filter is clean
  • Check the oil level changing it per manufacturer recommendations
  • Fill up the gas tank with new fuel and add STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer to keep fuel fresh
  • Crank it up and let it run for a minute to make sure it is working properly and all the fluids have gone through the system
  • Remove excess water that may have entered the fuel tank by adding Iso-HEET®

It is also a good idea to keep a bottle of Start Your Engines!® Fuel System Revitalizer on hand to help quickly power up any small engine equipment in the event the engine does not properly start. For more great tips and information, watch the Preparing Small Engines for Stormy Weather video.
