We are using state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat patients, while focusing on personalized patient care.
Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) April 17, 2013
The Florida Hospital Tampa Lung Institute officially opens its doors today. The new Lung Institute is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for a wide range of pulmonary conditions including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema, asthma, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis and lung fibrosis. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined each year. And COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year, making it the third leading cause of death in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new Lung Institute gives patients the ability to go through advanced screening, diagnosis, treatment and support of life threatening lung diseases in one convenient location.
The Florida Hospital Tampa Lung Institute Medical Director, Dr. Dragos G. Zanchi and Co-Medical Director, Dr. Rafael Martinez, MD, FCCP lead a multi-disciplinary clinical team that offers the highest level of pulmonary care and compassion for their patients. Dr. Zanchi is Board certified in Pulmonary Disease and Internal Medicine as well as Sleep Medicine and Nutrition. Dr. Martinez is board certified in Pulmonary Disease and Internal Medicine. Dr. Zanchi hosts weekly tumor board conferences that include pulmonologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, thoracic/robotic surgeons and pathologists to determine the best course of action for each patient and maximize positive outcomes. This patient-focused approach assures each patient that an entire team of experts is engaged in their care and treatment options. The Lung Institute also has a nurse navigator who personally guides each patient and their family through every step of their treatment and care.
“We are using state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and treat patients, while focusing on personalized patient care. Being able to provide our patients with a comprehensive approach to every phase of lung care from the initial diagnosis through treatment and post-treatment support groups is what distinguishes us from other programs.
“There isn’t another center like it in the Tampa Bay area. We offer the very latest options in non-surgical and surgical treatment, radiation therapy and post-surgical care,” said Dr. Zanchi, Florida Hospital Tampa Lung Institute Medical Director. The Florida Hospital Lung Institute provides leading edge diagnostic procedures such as Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)TM and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS). Both procedures are an option for patients who have developed a hard-to-reach lesion on their lung. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that uses the patient’s natural airways to access lesions that were previously hard to reach. Similarly, the EBUS procedure allows the physician to view hard to reach regions of the lungs and surrounding chest area via a special probe that sends sound waves (ultrasound) through the walls of the patient’s airways into the surrounding areas, while simultaneously displaying an endoscopic image. These unique approaches may increase the chances that a patient will be safely and accurately diagnosed and be able to begin receiving treatment all in the same location. “The opening of the Florida Hospital Tampa Lung Institute enables us to expand our services, and elevate the level of care we are providing throughout the region. We are so fortunate to be able to offer comprehensive lung care and meet the needs of our community through our expert clinicians who are thought leaders in the field of lung disease,” said John Harding, President and CEO of Florida Hospital Tampa.
The Florida Hospital Tampa Lung Institute offers many services including diagnosis and staging with CT/PET/MRI, state-of-the-art treatments such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), minimally invasive da Vinci robotic surgery, image-guided therapy (IGRT) and bronchial thermoplasty, along with rehabilitation and support programs.
