Muscats and Moscatos Win Consumers' Hearts and Taste Buds at Consumer Wine Awards

Top three winners at the Consumer Wine Awards Competition this month were Muscats and Moscatos showing burgeoning popularity of this varietal among consumers.

Showing the burgeoning popularity of the Muscat varieties, the top three wines winning Platinum medals at the Consumer Wine Awards Competition this month went to Peirano Estate Vineyards' 2012 Muscat (97 points), Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi 2012 Winemakers Selection Muscat Hamburg (96) and Barefoot California Moscato (95).

"Our informed consumer wine judges show the industry where their palates are," said Tim Hanni, M.W., a director of the competition and author of "Why You Like the Wines You Like" on people's palatal preferences published this month (Amazon). Over a dozen moscatos won platinum and gold medals at the Lodi event, which is presented by the Lodi Tokay Rotary Club and benefits the organization's charities. "Of interest is the spread of moscato across winery size and price classes," Hanni said. "The consumers are speaking up."

Gold medal winners were Barefoot Bubbly Blanc de Noir Red Moscato and Blanc de Blanc Bubbly Moscato, Madria Sangria Moscato, Quady 2011 Orange Muscat and 2011 Elysium Black Muscat, Redtree 2012 Muscat, Rejuvenate Late Harvest Muscat, Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Winemakers Selection 2012 Golden Muscat and Oak Leaf Moscato. Silver medal winners were Oliver Winery Moscato, Barefoot Red Moscato, Sorelle Winery 2012 Muscat Canelli, The Naked Grape Moscato, Domino Wines The Perfect Play Mendoza Moscato, Sequin 2012 Mendoza Moscato, Turning Leaf Red Moscato and Wish You Were Here Moscato from Chile.
