It’s well-known that Texans take grilling seriously, and so do we.

Tucanos Brazilian Grill, an authentic churrascaria-style restaurant with a Rio de Janeiro twist, will open the doors to its first Texas location in Sugar Land on May 22. The new family-friendly and festive restaurant is located at 16535 Southwest Freeway, Suite #2001 in the outdoor shopping area at First Colony Mall.

“We believe that there is an opportunity to bring the food, flair and festiveness of Brazil to Sugar Land through Tucanos Brazilian Grill,” said Steve Oldham, Tucanos founder and CEO. “It’s well-known that Texans take grilling seriously, and so do we. Sugar Land, as well as the general Houston area, are in for quite an experience with our unique flavors and engaging style of service.”

Having lived in Brazil and traveled back numerous times, Oldham wanted to capture the essence of a Brazilian churrascaria with a friendly and upbeat Rio de Janeiro twist. The Tucanos team has created a dining concept—even among other churrascaria-styled restaurants—that has become a fan favorite in the markets it has entered. “We receive numerous requests from diners to open a Tucanos in their market, including here in Texas,” said Oldham.

The Tucanos dining experience begins with the traditional red and green cue at each table. The green side turned up alerts servers to deliver a parade of nearly 20 varieties of grilled, specially seasoned and marinated meats, vegetables and fresh pineapple. Expertly trained meat servers slice sizzling portions off skewers directly onto diners’ plates. Tucanos also offers an award-winning Salad Festival, featuring more than 70 hot and cold items including salad toppings, pasta, soup, fruit and peel-and-eat shrimp.

The restaurant’s décor features a mix of bright colors, shared tile waves, decorative fabrics and glass, mahogany and maple accents, custom granite counters, and tropical greenery. Set to host up to 381 guests at one time, the new 9,485-square-foot restaurant includes a custom bar and two outdoor covered-patio dining areas. After opening their first restaurant in 2000, Tucanos has since gained a loyal and growing fan base, with Sugar Land marking its eight location nationwide.

Tucanos adult prices are $14.95 for lunch and $21.95 for dinner. Children ages six and under eat free, while prices for kids ages seven to 12 are $6.95 for lunch and $8.95 during dinner. “We’re looking forward to engaging Sugar Land’s senses with our festive flavors and upbeat atmosphere, while providing a value-oriented dining experience,” added Joe Heeb, Tucanos’ co-founder and CFO. “And we are big on birthdays. Guests that sign up for our Birthday Club will receive a free meal once a year during their birthday month.”

The restaurant will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will be closed on Sunday.
