The “Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act” was introduced today in Congress by the “Gang of Eight” Senators. This “Gang of Eight” bi-partisan group of Senators is comprised of: Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Lindsey Graham (SC), John McCain (R-AZ), Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ).

“These Senators and their staff members have been working very hard for the past few months to create a workable bi-partisan solution to many of our immigration problems that stem from a broken immigration system”, said immigration attorney Karen Weinstock, managing attorney of the Atlanta Immigration law firm Siskind Susser.

“This bill is also supported by labor and business groups such as AFL-CIO, the U.S. Chamber and other organizations that were involved in advance negotiations of large portions of the bill in order for it to have a chance to pass more smoothly through our Congress “, explained Atlanta Immigration lawyer Karen Weinstock.

“The bill is 844 pages long and fixes a few very important issues, such as legalization of undocumented immigrants, reduction in the legal immigration backlog that is now over 20 years of wait in some categories, increases temporary and permanent visas for essential employees for businesses and focuses on border and interior enforcement”, added Georgia Immigration Attorney.

“This bill is mostly good and although some changes will be necessary to be worked out, the framework actually works overall, and for the first time in a very long time Congress is actually doing something on this issue instead of being stuck”, explained the immigration attorney.

“In the House however, more work will be needed in order to pass anything because it is much more partisan than the Senate”, stated the immigration lawyer in Atlanta.
“I hope that the “Gang of Eight” bi-partisanship and the support of the business groups will inspire bi-partisanship at the House and cause a quicker and smoother process at the House” said the immigration attorney in closing.

“I am also hopeful that the $6.5 billion allocated in the bill to border enforcement at the southern border will not have to be spent if businesses could actually legally sponsor workers from Mexico and other Latin America countries. Part of the problem that we have right now is that there is no legal options to bring this workforce to the U.S.”, added the Atlanta immigration lawyer.

“Best of all, this bill includes a good version of the Dream Act, designed to help young people who were brought here illegally as children to become U.S. citizens quickly. This renews hope of millions of people across the country for a better future”, concluded the immigration attorney and head of the Atlanta Immigration law firm Karen Weinstock.
