The Miracle League has given my son the chance to play ball just like other kids, building his confidence and bringing the joy of sport to our family.

The Miracle League is a charitable organization that brings the joy of baseball to kids with mental or physical challenges. Michigan Miracle League (MLM) hosted its first all-abilities baseball season in the City of Southfield in 2004. The game is played on an adaptive field that is easy to navigate for kids with mobility challenges and assistive devices. The field is cushioned, helping to prevent injuries when players are less than steady on their feet. MLM also uses a "buddy" system, where each player is teamed up with an able-bodied volunteer to help them hit the ball, round the bases, and do everything else in a two-inning game.

Last year, the Miracle League hosted a special event at their "Field of Dreams", bringing together some of their special-needs players with stars from the Detroit Tigers, including Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. Steve Peck, MLM's founder and president, said, "Especially impressive was that after Cabrera visited the park, he took it upon himself to do even more. He donated $5,000 towards player registration fees which helped kids that would not otherwise be able to play." The Miguel Cabrera Foundation also invited a group of MLM players and family members to Comerica Park to watch batting practice. The kids were allowed on the field and even given a "Cabrera Chamitos" t-shirt. The kids were in heaven, especially when Cabrera came over to sign autographs.

Attorney Jason Waechter's office is less than a mile away from the Field of Dreams in Southfield. He became a proud supporter of Michigan's Miracle League after seeing firsthand how life-giving the experience is for players. Waechter, whose son has played for the last four years for the MLM Athletics, says, "As the parent of a child with special needs, I understand the value that an organization like The Miracle League can bring to kids and their families. The Miracle League has given my son the chance to play ball just like other kids, building his confidence and bringing the joy of sport to our family."

There's something about playing baseball that really lights up a child. For many kids facing mental and physical challenges, the opportunity to play ball can be out of reach. Michigan Miracle League brings kids this opportunity and with it, a whole lot more.
