The band hails from Birmingham and was formed in 1969. Originally, the band was composed of Osbourne (vocals), Ward (drummer), Iommi (guitarist) and Butler (bassist), but there have been several changes in the lineup due to various reasons. Of all the band members, it is only Iommi that never left the band. The band primarily played rock since their inception; however, they began as a heavy blues rock under the band name “Earth” in 1968, and then they integrated music themes including the occult, tuned down guitars and inspired by the horror genre. Some of the songs created by the band are mostly geared towards messages about political corruption, social instability, dangers of drug abuse and the apocalyptic oracles/prophecy of the consequences of wars. Osbourne was dismissed as the vocalist in 1979 due to drug problems and was replaced by Ronnie James Dio. After the departure from the band, Osbourne started his own successful solo music career.
Since then, changes in the members have also occurred. In 1997, the original band members reunited to record their 4th live album entitled Reunion and was a certified Platinum label in both the US and UK. The band (with the original lineup) is releasing an album called “13” this coming June 2013 and the first single (called God is Dead?) from this album has been recently released.
The band is considered the first in heavy metal and according to MTV, the band is the greatest metal band of all time. VH1 hailed the band as the second on their list of “100 Greatest Artist of Hard Rock” next to Led Zeppelin. For the Rolling Stone magazine list, the band is one of the greatest artists of all time. All in all, the band has sold 70 million copies of records all over the world.
