CCTV has caught the moment a sneak thief snatched an iPhone from an unsuspecting commuter’s hand on the London underground before dashing off the train as it arrived at the station – reports the Ilford Recorder.
In the CCTV footage, the man can be seen loitering behind the victim before snatching the smartphone and running along the Seven Kings station platform, before tripping over as he attempted to run up the station stairs to escape – smashing his head on the banister. He soon regained his bearings and ran up the stairs and out the exit, running across the street.
The thief was jailed for 14 months this week, after CCTV and blood at the scene helped identify him.
The Ilford Recorder reports that Det Con Gary Wildman, the investigating officer, said: “Frightening offences such as this are very rare on the rail network but, when they do occur, they are treated with the utmost seriousness.
“In this case, we were able to identify the culprit with excellent CCTV footage of the incident and clear evidence left at the scene.”
A spokesperson from AlertSystems said:
“Sneak thieves are becoming increasing common as an underhand tactic to steal from innocent people and businesses. With escapes so fast, it can be hard to catch them, but with HD Surveillance you could capture the evidence to identify them and aid the chances of them being prosecuted.”
