The image demonstrates a higher level of commercial activity in the West, despite it being over two decades since the fall of the wall

It has been revealed in The Telegraph that the photograph, taken by a Canadian astronaut, shows the Western half of the German city to be much more brightly illuminated, displaying vivid white light, in comparison to a softer yellow glow of the Eastern side of the city. The image demonstrates a higher level of commercial activity in the West, despite it being over two decades since the fall of the wall. Nearly a fifth of the street lights in the German capital are gas powered, however city authorities plan to replace these lights with electric lamps to reduce energy consumption.
The photo was posted online alongside the caption “Berlin at night. Amazingly, I think the light bulbs still show the East/West division from orbit.”
Providing customers with a number of energy efficient lighting solutions, both domestically and commercially, the team at Simple Lighting were naturally interested by the latest news. Offering a range of LED strip lights and tape lights a representative shares their thoughts on the matter.
“Lighting plays such an integral part of our everyday lives. It can represent mood, change atmosphere and even show an economical divide. We’d be interested to see what satellite images of other countries’ lighting would show. It is also good to hear that the government in Berlin is planning to replace street lights with more energy efficient models.”
