Each year SPIE recognizes outstanding achievements through its awards program. The Awards Committee is pleased to announce the 2013 SPIE Award recipients.
Gold Medal of the Society
Federico Capasso, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the Gold Medal Award in recognition of his seminal and wide ranging contributions to photonics, in particular bandgap engineering of optoelectronic materials and devices, quantum cascade lasers and plasmonics based photonid devices.
The Gold Medal of the Society is the highest honor that the SPIE bestows. Beginning in 1977, it has been awarded annually in recognition of outstanding engineering or scientific accomplishments in optics, electro-optics, or photographic technologies or applications. The recipient(s) shall have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of relevant technology.
Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award
James Fujimoto, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Award. SPIE presents this award in recognition of his pioneering research in optical coherence tomography and its development as a clinical tool.
The Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of biomedical optics through the development of innovative, high impact technologies. The award particularly honors pioneering contributions to optical methods and devices that have significant promise to accelerate or have already facilitated advances in biology or medicine. The award targets achievements that span disciplines and may include elements of basic research, technology development, and clinical translation.
Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award
Aydogan Ozcan with the University of California, Los Angeles, California, USA, is the inaurgural recipient of the SPIE Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award. SPIE presents this award in recognition of his seminal contributions to computational imaging, sensing and bio-photonics technologies impacting telemedicine and global health challenges.
The Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award is presented annually for extraordinary achievements in biophotonics technology development that show strong promise or potential impact in biology, medicine, and biomedical optics. The award targets achievements that span disciplines and may include elements of basic research, technology development, and clinical translation.
A.E. Conrady Award
Kevin P.Thompson, Synopsys Inc., Pasadena, CA USA, is the 2013 recipient of the A.E. Conrady Award in recognition of his efforts to discover and develop a complete aberration theory for imaging optical systems, nodal aberration theory, that applies to rotationally nonsymmetric optical systems.
The A. E. Conrady Award is given annually in recognition of exceptional contributions in design, construction, and testing of optical systems and instrumentation. The recognition of this award is based on developments of new equipment, techniques, and applications for designing, testing, analyzing, and/or evaluating optical systems, components, and theories.
Harold E. Edgerton Award
Martin C. Richardson, CREOL, University of Central Florida, FL USA, is the 2013 recipient of the Harold E. Edgerton Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of high-speed diagnostics of transient dense-plasmas.
The Harold E. Edgerton Award is presented annually for outstanding contributions to optical or photonic techniques in the application and understanding of high speed physical phenomena. The development of new technologies and the new application of existing technologies shall be considered in the determination of the award.
Dennis Gabor Award
David J. Brady, Duke University, Durham, NC USA, is the 2013 winner of the Dennis Gabor award in recognition of his development of compressive holographic and tomographic imaging systems and for advances in the physical and information science of imaging and spectroscopy.
The Dennis Gabor award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in diffractive wavefront technologies, especially those which further the development of holography and metrology applications.
George W. Goddard Award
Samuel Harvey Moseley, NASA Goddard Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the George W. Goddard Award in recognition of his extraordinary inventions of superconducting imaging arrays for astronomy, ranging from submillimeter bolometers to energysensitive X-ray microcalorimeters, and even dark matter detectors, as well as microshutter arrays for the James Webb Space Telescope near IR spectrometer.
The George W. Goddard Award is presented annually in recognition of exceptional achievement in optical or photonic instrumentation for aerospace, atmospheric science, or astronomy. The award is for the invention and development of a new technique, photonic instrumentation, instrument, or system.
G.G. Stokes Award
José Jorge Gil, University of Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Spain, is the 2013 recipient of the G.G. Stokes Award in recognition of his groundbreaking collection of rigorous mathematical descriptions of polarization that are used widely to interpret experimental data. His work in polarization optics is a pivotal collection of contributions that form part of the underpinnings of modern polarimetry.
The G.G. Stokes Award is given annually for exceptional contribution to the field of optical polarization. The award may be presented for a specific achievement, development, or invention of significant importance to optical science and society, or may be given for lifetime achievement.
Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology
Małgorzata Kujawińska, Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland, is the 2013 recipient of the Chandra S. Vikram award in recognition of her lifetime of achievements in full-field optical metrology and optical testing: her pioneering contribution to fields such as automatic fringe pattern analysis, integrated interferometric sensors, optical and digital holography, optical tomography, structured light and moiré fringe methods as applied to fields such as experimental mechanics, multimedia, material engineering, civil engineering and art objects measurement and monitoring.
The Chandra S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology is given annually for exceptional contribution to the field of optical metrology. The award may be presented for a specific achievement, development, or invention of significant importance to optical metrology, or may be given for lifetime achievement.
Frits Zernike Award in Microlithography
David Markle, Periodic Structures Inc., Los Gatos, CA, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the Frits Zernike Award for Microlithography in recognition of his pivotal role in the development of numerous lithography tools, including the Perkin-Elmer Micralign and Micrascan tools, and the Ultratech Stepper. His insights and engineering talents have helped to guide both mechanical and optical designs of lithography tools for the last 40 years.
The Frits Zernike Award is given for outstanding accomplishments in microlithographic technology, especially those furthering the development of semiconductor lithographic imaging solutions.
SPIE Early Career Achievement Award
Timothy J. White, US Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the Early Career Achievement Award in recognition of his innovative work in the development of light responsive materials and their employment as smart, remotely cued optically and mechanically adaptive devices.
The SPIE Early Career Achievement Award is given for the first time in 2008, to an early career professional in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to any of the engineering or scientific fields of interests to SPIE.
SPIE Educator Award
Barry L. Shoop, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, USA is the 2013 Educator Award winner in recognition of his development of comprehensive criteria for optical engineering in the undergraduate college curriculum and overseeing the implementation of ABET requirements used for accreditation of undergraduate (BS) degrees in optical engineering.
The SPIE Educator Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to optics education by an SPIE instructor or an educator in the field.
SPIE Technology Achievement Award
Alan C. Bovik, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA, is the 2013 recipient of the Technology Achievement award in recognition of his broad and lasting contributions to the field of perception based image processing.
The SPIE Technology Achievement award is awarded annually to recognize outstanding technical accomplishment in optics, electro-optics, photonic engineering, or imaging. The recipient(s) shall have contributed significantly to the advancement of one or more of these areas with specific demonstration(s) or application(s).
SPIE presents several yearly awards that recognize outstanding individual and team technical accomplishments and meritorious service to the Society. SPIE urges you to nominate a colleague for his or her outstanding achievements.
