Background Screening Survey Reveals Retail Industry Trends

The Retail Industry Background Screening Benchmarking Report prepared by GIS has revealed an increased interest in ongoing criminal monitoring, a reliance on national criminal databases, and more.

The report, which is slated for release on Sunday, April 28, takes an in-depth look at retailers’ background check habits including what checks are run, what positions are screened and what checks they intend to increase their use of. One of the most prominent trends found in this report is the retail industry’s desire to increase their use of ongoing criminal monitoring.

“As a background check tool, ongoing criminal monitoring allows employers to stay current on their employees’ criminal background,” says Matt Robbins, Vice President at GIS and resident retail industry expert. “This rapidly expanding trend allows employers to screen their employees on an ongoing basis, rather than only pre-hire or when the employee is being considered for a promotion. In doing so, retailers can be confident that the people representing them to the world remain free of barrier records.”

In addition to traditional county criminal searches, retailers indicated a heavy use of national criminal databases, with 79% of survey respondents indicating that they use a national criminal database to check at least some of their employees. As most ongoing criminal monitoring systems work off proprietary databases, this fits well with the number of retailers currently utilizing ongoing criminal monitoring and planning to implement it.

Of special interest was the response to E-Verify. The survey was completed as the Senate proposed an immigration reform bill that would require every employer in the U.S. to utilize E-Verify within four years. The survey showed that more than a third of retailers use E-Verify in all locations as it is, while even more use it where required. There still remains a decent percentage that does not utilize E-Verify, but legislation requiring E-Verify would likely cause very little change in the retail world.
