The University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry invites seniors from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to its annual Senior Smiles Health Fair on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

This free event will take place at the Dugoni School of Dentistry from 9 a.m. to noon at the school’s San Francisco campus at 2155 Webster Street. The event is open to all seniors ages 55 and older. No appointments are necessary, but RSVPs for group attendees are encouraged by calling 415-929-6482.

The Senior Smiles Health Fair aims to support seniors in the prevention of diseases and the early identification of a change in their health status. Services will include dental health check-ups (including oral cancer and denture screenings), blood glucose testing, cholesterol testing, vision and glaucoma screenings, hearing testing, and massage and exercise therapy. Complimentary refreshments will also be offered.

The event is coordinated by student and faculty volunteers from the Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) group. This year the California Pacific Medical Center’s Community Health Resource Center is co-sponsoring the event and will provide assistance with health education and screenings.

Attendees will also learn about school’s wide variety dental services, including cleanings, fillings, dentures, digital X-rays, cosmetic dentistry, emergency services and facial pain treatment. The cost of dental care at the school is about 30 – 40% less expensive than a typical Bay Area private dental office. Most insurance plans are accepted, including private insurance and Denti-Cal. Flexible payment plans are available for qualified patients. Additionally, seniors over age 65 receive a 10 percent discount on dental services offered at the school.

“We truly enjoy this opportunity to work with local seniors and help them take steps toward achieving their health and wellness goals,” said Christine Miller, RDH, MHS, MA and director of Community Programs. “The seniors we see during Senior Smiles Health Fair receive valuable information about their state of health and have a great time interacting with the students who volunteer at the event.”
