On April 29, Yumi Media, a food website devoted to delivering the latest and greatest in food news, recipes, and products to incorporate into your own healthy lifestyle, responds to an article about the vegetarian awareness that one schools district is promoting during US VegWeek.

An article in the Shoreline Times discusses how schools in Guilford, Connecticut brought a vegetarian menu to their cafeterias. Its part of a campaign by Compassion Over Killing called US VegWeek, which is held nationwide.

The program kicked off on Earth Day and aimed to teach kids how to be environmentally friendly. Among the initiatives were education about recycling and the introduction of a vegetarian menu to all schools in the district, from elementary school to high school. Timothy Cipriano, Food Services Director, says, “We want to show kids there are other options available. The whole goal is to promote different foods to the schools.”

Yumi Media representative Justin Maas knows that it is very important to introduce a healthy lifestyle to children at an early age. “Kids are influenced by their parents’ lifestyles and may not know about other options,” he says. “It is a great idea for schools to teach kids about vegetarian choices. Nutrition is very important for kids as they’re developing and oftentimes they’re not getting what they need. Vegetables are a big part of keeping healthy, and if kids need to get more protein without eating meat, products like Quorn, are always good options.”
