citalia, the leading Italian specialist, has shared its extensive knowledge and experience with a specifically designed interactive route map of the upcoming Giro d’Italia.

The renowned Giro d’Italia cycling race kicks off next week with an exciting start in Italy’s city of Naples. This is the 96th annual Giro d’Italia, a multiple-stage-race which sees professional cyclists from across the world assemble in Italy to ride across the country. The race was first organised in 1909 and has been held every year since apart from when it was suspended during the two World Wars. Originally created to increase sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the race continued to gain prominence and has since expanded from mainly Italian riders to professional cyclists from all over the world.

Today, the Giro d’Italia is organised by RCS Sport and is a UCI World Tour event which, along with the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana, makes up cycling’s prestigious Grand Tours. The race is primarily held in Italy, but does occasionally pass through other countries; this year will see cyclists pass through the mountain areas of France. The route also changes each year but always consists of 21 day long stages and two rest days.

This year the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish will compete in the 2,116 mile race which takes place from 4-26 May. The cyclists will start in Naples and make their way around the boot before finishing in Brescia. The Giro d’Italia will test the endurance of the riders as they take on grueling mountain climbs and exhausting time trials, all in the hope of winning the coveted pink jersey.
