No one would have ever thought the shy, quiet girl from the remote Bush of Alaska would grow into the international art sensation she is today. But that's just what Megan Aroon Duncanson of MADART™ Studios has accomplished, particularly with her most recent accolade of having won the "People's Choice" Award in the ABSOLUT X® Poster contest. Her fun, colorful depiction of Miami's South Beach night scene through her "Miami Night Life" painting helped Megan to win with an overwhelming margin of 80+ votes over 2nd place.
It all started when Megan was just a young child growing up in one of the most remote places on the planet, the bush of Alaska. There were no roads, no power other than generator, no TV outside of a VHS player and video tapes, communication to the outside world was through CB or VHF radio as there were no phones, and heat was provided by firewood, which had to be cut and hauled by Megan and her four siblings. Megan and her brothers and sister were either home schooled or transported, by a small open boat their father owned, to the tiny fishing village of Meyers Chuck for school. In between school and living the outdoor life of an Alaskan bush child, Megan would spend her time soaking in her natural surroundings and sketching everything she saw onto her notepads and paper. Her favorite classes in school were always art and she even professed many times over that she was going to be an artist when she grew up.
Fast forward to the present day, where Megan now splits her time between Florida and Alaska and has made her dream and goal of being an artist an ABSOLUT® reality. She has sold thousands of originals around the world and her art graces homes in print form in the tens of thousands and steadily increasing every day. Her art has been seen on hit TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, adorned in hotel lobbies and rooms, used on CD and book covers, featured in magazines and catalogs and is currently offered on hundreds of products by over 20 different manufacturers; just to name a few of her recent accomplishments in the art and design world.
It was in 2009 that Megan decided one of her goals as an artist was to work with ABSOLUT® in some artistic capacity, she even created an original painting, that currently is part of her private collection, that she called "ABSOLUT® Paradise" featuring the iconic ABSOLUT® bottle in a tropical beach setting. When the opportunity to participate in a contest put on by ABSOLUT® for their new event series ABSOLUT X® in 2013 arose, Megan knew this was her chance to have her art partnered with the ABSOLUT® brand that is known for its unending support of the arts. With the help of social media through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Blogs, Websites and more, Megan was able to garner the necessary votes, and then some, to win hands down the "People's Choice Award" in the ABSOLUT X® Contest.
Megan says of her win:
"It was a very humbling and rewarding experience to see all the people who voted for my art and the wonderful comments I received on my painting. Some of the people I know personally, but so many others whom I don't know simply believed in my painting and how it represented the Miami night scene as they remembered it and so they cast their vote. I couldn't have done it without them, thank you to all my art collectors, fans, followers, friends and family, you're the ABSOLUT® best!!"
