Zurmo Open Source CRM Hits Major Release Milestone

Zurmo 1.5 adds major CRM functionality including advanced Reporting, Workflow, and enhanced Mobile Access. The CRM application, which engages users through Gamification, continues to add Enterprise grade features while remaining Open Source and freely downloadable.

When we started development on Zurmo 28 months ago, our objective was to disrupt the open source CRM space. A whole new level of this disruption is marked by Zurmo 1.5.

Developers of the Zurmo Open Source Customer Relationship Management application today announced the release of Zurmo 1.5. The latest version brings significant additional functionality including Advanced Reporting, a Workflow Engine, new Marketing Automation capabilities, and enhanced Mobile Access. All new features in Zurmo 1.5 are freely available in the Open Source Edition of the application.

“This release really separates Zurmo from the rest of the pack. In most other open source CRM software, features like reporting and workflow are held back from the freely downloadable version. With Zurmo, you do not get short-handed. It is complete,” states Zurmo co-Founder Ray Stoeckicht. “When we started development on Zurmo 28 months ago, our objective was to disrupt the open source CRM space. A whole new level of this disruption is marked by Zurmo 1.5.”

Advanced Reporting

Users can create reports in Zurmo based on virtually any CRM data stemming from Accounts, Contacts, Leads, Meetings, Notes, Opportunities, or Tasks. Filters are simply dragged and dropped to create a report structure. Custom reports can be saved, shared with other users, and generated on demand.

Use Case Example: A Marketing Manager would like to closely gauge the ongoing progress of a campaign targeting healthcare companies in Chicago. He creates a report based on opportunities that have “Closed Won” for Accounts located in the specified region. He selects “Insurance” as the filtered industry. He includes the campaign in question and sets other parameters including dates, amounts, etc. He runs the report on a regular basis to ensure sufficient Return on Investment is being achieved through the campaign. Now he has a clear visualization of sales fluctuations based on the criteria he has selected, and can tweak his campaign as needed.


With Zurmo’s Workflow Engine, users can create simple and complex rules to trigger a variety of alerts or actions in the system.

Use Case Example: A Sales Manager’s performance is measured by a quarterly quota that her team must meet. She sets up a workflow rule in Zurmo to alert her on a weekly basis of the progress of Opportunities created by her team. If an Opportunity has not closed by its expected due date, both the manager and the sales rep receive an email generated automatically by the system, based on the criteria set in the workflow rule.

Marketing Lists and Email Templates

Marketing Automation has been introduced to the Zurmo application in version 1.5 with the inclusion of Marketing Lists and Email Templates. These new features lay the foundation for the full suite of Marketing Automation functionality that will include Campaigns, a mass email marketing engine, auto-responders, and trackable URLs in Zurmo version 2.0.

Marketing Lists allow users to segment Leads, Contacts, and Account records according to parameters set by advanced searches or reports.

Both plain text and HTML Email Templates can now be created in Zurmo. Users have the ability to include reader-specific dynamic information into emails. For example, a salutation in an email is personalized according to the recipient’s first name.

Other notable features added to Zurmo in version 1.5 include full Mobile Accessibility through the employment of responsive web application design, enhanced language support, a unified inbox where users access aggregated communication items, the ability for organizations to personalize implementations by uploading company logos, and menu customizations.
