Camarillo CA (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

SlimDoggy (http://slimdoggy.com) announces the release of the SlimDoggy Food Ranking Index, or SFRI, which ranks most of the commercially available dog foods on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best, according to their ingredients. The SFRI is available as part of the SlimDoggy iPhone App which provides dog owners with the personalized information they need to ensure that their dog achieves and maintains a proper and healthy weight. The app allows dog owners to log their dog’s exercise activities and tells them exactly how many calories they should feed their pet each day. With the new SFRI, the SlimDoggy App can now help answer two critical questions for dog owners: 1) “how much” should I feed my dog and 2) “what” am I feeding my dog.

“Just like with people food, there is a growing need for consumers to understand what is in the food that they buy for their pets. Dog food labels are often hard to interpret and there are many people who don’t understand that a chicken recipe might actually contain little if any real chicken.” said Founder and CEO, Steve Pelletier. “We have compiled the ingredients for most of the commercially available dog foods and now can show people a single number that encapsulates the relative goodness of a food based on these ingredient lists. Our approach rewards those containing more real foods and less processed and artificial ingredients. The SFRI, which is similar to the NuVal Index which is used in some grocery stores for people food, was developed to help consumers make healthier food choices for their pets.”

Keeping your dog at a healthy and lean weight can improve the quality of a dog’s life and possibly extend their life -- research shows that lean dogs can outlive overweight dogs by about 15%, or almost 2 years depending on the breed. Proper diet, feeding the correct amount of the right kind of food, is the major determinant of a pet’s weight and overall health. The SlimDoggy app is designed to provide this information and will also adjust its recommendations as your dog’s activities or food brands change.

Dr Ernie Ward, veterinarian and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention speaking to host Robert Hudson on a recent episode of The Pet Radio Show tells the listeners “The most important decision that you make each day regarding your pet’s health is what you feed it. What you pour into that bowl each morning has the greatest influence of anything else you will do to keep them healthy and living long”.

Founded by a team of dog lovers, fitness-enthusiasts and tech industry veterans, SlimDoggy is committed to providing pet owners tools and technology to help them have healthy and happy dogs. SlimDoggy Founder Steve Pelletier will be a Featured Presenter at BarkWorld Expo 2013. The Company donates a portion of its revenue and products and services to dog rescues as a way to give back to those in need.
