According to CBC News, homeowners who smoke receive less for their house when it’s on the market than non smokers. The new survey carried out by Canadian real estate brokers found that smoking in the home can reduce the value of a resale property by up to 29 percent. The findings estimate that homeowners could potentially lose up to $107,000 on their home valuation and final selling price. The study showed that an overwhelming majority of estate agents felt it was more difficult to sell a house where home owners have smoked inside. Respondents stated that buyers are less likely to purchase a home where people have smoked, with a further 27 percent believing that potential buyers avoid homes were people have smoked completely.

One broker said, "Smoking stains walls and carpets, and leaves a smell that can be hard to eliminate. Many prospective buyers are really put off by homes that have been smoked in and they can be very challenging to sell."

Whilst some smokers do their upmost to quit using conventional methods such as nicotine replacement patches and chewing gum, some still struggle to quit and often fall back into old habits. Society is aware of the dangers of smoking on health and now on even external factors like our home’s value, as a result more and more smokers are looking to quit.
