Decide found that before Mother’s Day is an optimal time to buy fine jewelry, brand name handbags and wallets, shoes, heels, flats, comfortable shoes and most models of popular tablets and eReaders.

Pricing data from Decide.com reveals the best and worst items to buy this Mother’s Day. Decide tracked millions of price movements across the year from the top retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Sears, Walmart, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Zappos, and Overstock to uncover substantial savings in some categories and other gift categories at their highest price of the year.

What to Buy Now Through Mother’s Day:

If you’re getting a gift this year and want to navigate through the advertisements to find the best prices, Decide found that before Mother’s Day is an optimal time to buy fine jewelry, brand name handbags and wallets, shoes, heels, flats, comfortable shoes and most models of popular tablets and eReaders.

Fine jewelry (price range $500-$1,000):
-Women’s jewelry: necklaces, bracelets, and earrings from stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom drop to their lowest average price of the year in the weeks before Mother’s Day.
o    Best time of year to buy: mid-April through mid-May
o    Expected savings: 20 percent
o    Average price savings of $150

Brand name handbags (price range: $100-$300):
-Handbags from brand name designers drop to their lowest average price of the year in the weeks before Mother’s Day.
o    Best time of year to buy: mid-April through mid-May
o    Expected savings: 25 percent
o    Average price savings of $40

Brand name women’s wallets (price range $50-200):
-Handbags from stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Amazon and Zappos drop to their lowest average price of the year in the weeks before Mother’s Day.
o    Best time of year to buy: mid-April through mid-May
o    Expected savings: 25 percent
o    Average price savings of $40

Shoes: Heels, Flats, Pumps, Comfort Shoes (price range $50-200):
-Women’s shoes from from Fry, Tory Burch, Cole Haan and other brand names are near their low price of the year in the month leading to Mother’s Day
o    Best time of year to buy: April and May
o    Expected savings: 20 percent
o    Average price savings: $25

Tablets (specific models): iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy Note, Amazon Kindle Fire

What to Buy After Mother’s Day:

Many items tracked dropped in price after Mother’s Day, after summer, or at various points later in the year. Here are some items that you might consider waiting to buy:

Flowers (price range $20-50)
-If you can wait a week or two to buy roses, lilacs, irises or other plants in bloom this Mother’s Day, expect to save at least 25 percent. Flower prices spike from 20 to 50 percent or more the week leading up to holidays like Valentine’s Day and we expect the same trend this Mother’s Day.

Laptops (price range $500-$1500)
-Laptops from HP, Samsung, Lenovo and dozens of others fluctuate in price quite a bit throughout the year, but there are three optimal times to buy a laptop to get the best price. If you can wait to buy a laptop for six to eight weeks, prices are predicted to come down.
o    Best times of year to buy: late June through early July, late September after the Back to School Season and the last two weeks of December
o    Expected savings by waiting: 10-20 percent
o    Average dollar savings: $200

Brand Name Sunglasses (price range $100-$250):
-Sunglasses from designers including Oakley, Kate Spade, Marc By Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Ray-Ban, and Tory Burch reach a yearly high price just before summer, decrease in price after Mother’s Day and decrease again after the summer season.
o    Best time of year to buy: after the summer season, late October through Dec. 31
o    Expected savings by waiting: 15 percent

Affordable and Sports Watches (price range $20-$50):
-Affordable, inexpensive watches from stores including Amazon, Target and Walmart are near their highest prices of the year leading up to Mother’s Day so, if you can, it’s worth waiting to save up to 17 percent.
o    Best time to buy: the month of July and early November
o    Expected savings by waiting: 17 percent

Women’s Athletic Shoes (price range $50-$150):
-Athletic shoes including Nike, Adidas, Asics, Saucony, Brooks, and New Balance are near their high price in the weeks before Mother’s Day.
o    Best time of year to buy: after the summer season, late October through Dec. 31.
o    Expected savings by waiting: 20 percent
