Askari Defense and Intelligence, LLC recently led a defense delegation -- consisting of major U.S. defense corporations -- to Libya. The event was arranged in coordination with the Libyan Ministry of Defense, the American Chamber of Commerce in Libya, and a local Libyan Company, Massar. The primary objective of the event was to enable U.S. corporations to understand Libya’s security priorities and showcase their solutions and offerings in a bid to assist Libya’s nascent defense establishment. The event also aimed to enhance bilateral trade between Libya and the U.S., which would strengthen the Libyan private sector with the support of U.S. corporations, as well as open up Libya’s promising market to U.S. businesses.

A number of U.S. Government entities were involved at various stages in the planning of the event, which provided the participating U.S. corporations with one-on-one opportunities to better understand the requirements and challenges of Libya’s defense and security, as well as U.S. policies towards the African state.

Libyan Defense Minister Mohammed al Bargati inaugurated the two-day event, which was held at the prestigious Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli. Over 100 Libyan and U.S. officials participated in the event, including the U.S. Chargé D'Affaires in Libya, William Roebuck; DAT/OSC Lieutenant Colonel Phillips; the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Libya, Richard Griffiths; Libyan Brigadier Ali Belgasem; and Libyan General Ahmed Tajori.

“We are very excited to lead this initiative, and look forward to assisting Libya provide security to its people,” said Mary Beth Long, CEO of Askari. Ms. Long credited the American Chamber of Commerce in Libya and Libya-based Massar for the success of the event. She also praised the Libyan hosts for their hospitality and level of participation.

The Libyan Government has reportedly asked Ms. Long to organize a follow-on session, indicating Tripoli’s interest in developing stronger relations with U.S. corporations.
