The fact that God builds on His own terms is an offence to the natural man, who wants divine blessing on terms much more favorable to his rebellion and unbelief. But the God of Scripture recognizes no other gods, no other religions...

In his most recent article, No Other River, No Other Stream, Off The Grid News columnist Bill Heid discusses God’s grace and the ways in which He gives it. Though many say that truth is relative and that any religion can provide a way to salvation, Heid argues that salvation comes from God alone through the means He has prescribed.
Heid illustrates his point through the continuing story of Naaman, the Syrian general who came to the prophet Elisha to be cured of his leprosy. When Elisha sent a servant to tell him to bathe in the Jordan River, Naaman became indignant, believing that the rivers of his homeland were superior and should therefore have offered at least as great a chance of a cure as the dirty Israelite river. Finally his household convinced him to follow the prophet’s instructions and he was cured.
Because Israel was God’s chosen among the peoples of the Old Testament, He worked through them to spread His salvation and works among the rest of the world. Heid remarks that “God had deliberately planted Israel at the crossroads of three continents. Merchants, diplomats, and kings regularly passed the Promised Land where they could hear the message of grace. And in the days of Solomon, Israelites accompanied Phoenician sailors to the ends of the earth—perhaps even to the Americas, bearing that same messages (1 Kings 10:22)”. For this reason, Naaman had to approach God through God’s people and receive His grace through the river which symbolized His covenant with His people.
Just as Naaman had to follow God’s instructions to be healed, so must people today follow the path of salvation God laid out through His Son Jesus. Grace and salvation are free gifts from God, found through Scripture, Baptism, and Holy Communion, and cannot be earned through any human means. Though many religions claim to provide a way to heaven, the only true way is through Jesus. Heid explains, “The fact that God builds on His own terms is an offence to the natural man, who wants divine blessing on terms much more favorable to his rebellion and unbelief. But the God of Scripture recognizes no other gods, no other religions, no path to heaven outside of Jesus Christ. He alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no one comes to the Father but by Him (John 14:6).”
