Matilda the Musical from London opened on Broadway this month, setting off massive search traffic for seats, said Felina Martinez at Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 children’s classic, the seven-time Olivier Award winning play is at the Shubert Theatre.

The magical story of a gifted five year old girl, the London production of Matilda based on the book by Roald Dahl, is now playing at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway.

Matilda the Musical has been imported from London. It opened this month at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway. Based on early reviews and receipts, this British production about a precocious (and magically gifted) child is living up to its critical acclaim.

Originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the musical opened in Stratford in 2010 and made its West End premiere at the Cambridge Theatre in November of 2011. It then won seven 2012 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, the most such awards ever won by a single show.

Based on the children's novel by British author Roald Dahl, the musical is written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Critical reviews on this side of the pond have proved particularly positive. The stage version has been hailed by one critic as "the best British musical since Billy Elliot".

The New York Times, in an April 11, 2013 review by Ben Brantley, has called Matilda “an exhilarating tale of empowerment, as told from the perspective of the most powerless group of all… little children. … even more glorious than promised.”

The cast and play have also already been nominated for Tony Awards, as well as seven 2013 Broadway Choice Awards including Favorite New Musical and Song.

“Search traffic for Matilda has been trending at very high volumes,” said Felina Martinez at online ticket marketplace “Although many of the performances begin to sell out closer to show time, we still have a great inventory of tickets available.”

“In fact, we’re proud to be able to offer theatre-goers the most complete and continuously updated selection of Matilda tickets, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase,” said Martinez.

“To access the inventory of cheap Matilda tickets we now have available, customers can go to and search for Matilda – then select their tickets,” said Martinez.

The inspiration for the play is a children’s novel called Matilda by British author Roald Dahl, with illustrations by Quentin Blake. Published in London in 1988, it is a story about Matilda Wormwood, a wonderful little girl who loves to read, happens to be a genius and has telekinetic powers. This means she is able to move objects by scientifically inexplicable means, as by the exercise of a magic power.

In short, Matilda is an extraordinary five year-old child with ordinary and rather unpleasant parents. Mom and Dad are contemptuous of their daughter's prodigious talents, and her discovery of her magical abilities. But not only does she have the worst parents, Matilda also has the worst school principal imaginable. Fortunately, she has a wonderful teacher.

Dahl’s classic tale tells how Matilda overcomes her family and school obstacles to help herself and her teacher succeed.

The cast includes child actors Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro alternating as Matilda, Gabriel Ebert as Mr. Wormwood, and Lesli Margherita as Mrs. Wormwood. Reprising their roles are Bertie Carvell as Mrs. Trunchbull and Lauren Ward as Miss Honey.

Small changes were made from the London production, with some lyrics being changed to suit the American ear, and more scenes using the stalls/orchestra seating area of the theatre.

The book was adapted into a film in 1996, as well a two-part adaptation for BBC Radio, and became a musical in 2010.
