The Life Adjustment Team (LAT), based in Culver City, Calif., is celebrating 36 years of literally adjusting lives and, in many cases, saving lives and families.

"I started the Life Adjustment Team in 1977 because of a patient who was discharged from the hospital after being treated for schizophrenia; she went home and was really committed to helping herself, but there were no resources to help her get her life together in her own surroundings," said LAT founder and CEO Pete Linnett. "Going home to the same circumstances again and again was bound to fail. So we started a home-based recovery model."

Fast forward 36 years: Thanks to the work of the Life Adjustment Team, thousands of clients in the Los Angeles area are now leading the best lives possible for them. The LAT's unique approach focuses on the individual, the family and each patient's particular circumstances. Every member of the psychiatric rehabilitation team has a doctorate or master's degree in psychology or a related field and several years of experience.

Team members go on location to help clients and their families deal with mental health issues that many times are at the root of problems that can lead to suicide — such as depression, bipolar disorder and many others.

"We take a team approach and work in conjunction with the client's psychiatrist, therapist or other treatment provider," Linnett said. "Our focus is on creating stability in the home and community through a treatment plan that is proven and effective. Our goal is for our clients to no longer need us."

About the Life Adjustment Team

The Life Adjustment Team (LAT), created 36 years ago by Pete Linnett, uses a holistic approach to treat individuals with mental illnesses and their families. The Team provides effective, in-home structure and support systems using evidence-based treatment concepts. While significant progress has been made in developing new medications that reduce the symptoms of mental illness, equally important is the empowering knowledge and skills patients can attain through the state-of-the-art rehabilitation that LAT provides — in home — to help individuals and their families manage their illness and lead productive and meaningful lives. The Life Adjustment Team, based in Culver City, travels throughout the Los Angeles area for their clients and works closely with local rehabilitation centers, hospitals and psychiatrists who call on the Team's expertise for continued in-home care.
