USO Calls On Americans This Summer to Fire Up Their Grills In Support Of Our Troops

USO launches Barbecue for the Troops, a summer campaign to unite communities and organize barbecue fundraisers in support of troops and their families

There’s no better way to show your appreciation this summer than to raise funds to support programs and services our troops and their families need most, while joining family and friends in a time-honored and fun American tradition.

Today the USO announces the launch of a new grassroots fundraising campaign, Barbecue for the Troops, to provide a localized and easy way for individuals and organizations to raise money in support of U.S. troops and their families. The campaign will take place during the seasonal barbecue timeframes of Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day 2013.

Communities across the country are encouraged to host barbecues and raise funds for USO programs and services that provide critical support to those who need the USO most: deployed troops, military families, wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers, and families of the fallen.

While many Americans will be celebrating the summer season and holidays with outdoor barbecue festivities surrounded by friends and family, many troops and their families will be spending that time apart. Barbecue for the Troops offers people everywhere a simple way to help support USO programs like Operation Phone Home that keep servicemen and women and their loved ones connected during deployment, or USO Holiday Boxes that deliver a touch of home to troops in remote locations, during the holidays.

“The USO provides Americans with opportunities to say ‘thank you’ to the men and women who sacrifice so much for our country,” said Kelli Seely, USO SVP and Chief Development Officer. “There’s no better way to show your appreciation this summer than to raise funds to support programs and services our troops and their families need most, while joining family and friends in a time-honored and fun American tradition. Barbecue for the Troops will kick off May 27 for Memorial Day and run until the end of Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2, 2013. Volunteers hosting a Barbecue for the Troops event can create a fundraising page for contributions from donors at BBQfortheTroops.org. They can also use the site to create an online fundraising page with many step-by-step and easy to use tools and resources to help create, promote and deliver a successful barbecue event.
