Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan will share insights into the benefits of regional cooperation with fellow elected and appointed officials at 8:30 a.m. June 11 during the American Water Works Association’s Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus, part of AWWA’s Annual Conference & Exposition in Denver.
Mayor Hogan will discuss the Colorado WISE Partnership, widely viewed as a national model for successful regional collaboration on water supply and infrastructure. Aurora Water is also a recognized leader in the national Partnership for Safe Water program, having become the only utility in the United States to achieve Phase IV Excellence designation in two of its water treatment plants.

The Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus – free to pre-registered public officials – is part of a public officials program that also includes 12 hours of certificate training. Public officials can also choose from more than 500 technical presentations at the broader ACE13 conference and see the latest technology solutions from several hundred exhibitors.
ACE13, which will bring an estimated 11,000 water experts to Denver June 9-13, takes place at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver.
The WISE Partnership is a regional water supply project among Aurora Water, Denver Water and the South Metro Water Supply Authority, to combine excess surface water supplies and system capacities to create a sustainable new water supply for South Metro. Members of South Metro are highly dependent on non-renewable groundwater and are seeking a sustainable surface water supply. South Metro will develop infrastructure within its area for distribution to their members.

Public Officials Breakfast and Caucus (Tues., June 11, 8-11:30 a.m., Rooms 605 and 607, Colorado Convention Center)
Following Mayor Steve Hogan’s address – which will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. – public officials will learn how to take advantage of new tools to gauge and communicate water infrastructure needs and examine the affordability of federal water and wastewater mandates. They will also hear a legislative update on the proposed new funding mechanism, the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Authority. Event sponsors include Brown & Caldwell, Calgon Carbon, Jacobs and Wachs Water.
Public Officials Certificate Program (June 9-11, 1-5 p.m. each day, Rooms 610 and 612, Colorado Convention Center)
For the fifth consecutive year, public officials registered at ACE13 have an opportunity to earn the AWWA Public Officials Certificate by participating in three four-hour courses June 9, 10 and 11. The course on June 9 is “Introduction to Water and Sewer Operating Environments”. The course on June 10 is “Water and Sewer infrastructure, Operations, and Maintenance”. The course on June 11 is “Leadership in the Water Industry.” Renowned water educator and author Frederick Bloetscher, PhD, P.E., will teach the courses. Public officials may register for all three courses to earn the certificate or take individual courses.
