As students prepare to say goodbye to their term-time homes, upon leaving both students and their landlords should ensure the property is clean and well-maintained prior to the next tenant’s move, says Total Landlord Insurance.
One of the most common issues students and landlords have to contend with is the matter of returning a deposit. Unfortunately, due to lack of care and attention, thousands of students lose their deposits each year simply by not sticking to their tenancy agreement – which is why it is imperative to read the contract in full to ensure the safe return of the deposit.
Natalie Crane of Total Landlord Insurance commented: “Although an academic year may seem like a long time, before you know it term time is up – and as we enter May, students have only one or two months before they have to leave for good. But instead of fretting about how little they have left, they should take this period as the chance to plan ahead – and carry out a checklist of their tenancy agreement before it’s too late and miss out on their deposit.”

“Another problem many student tenants tend to forget is moving furniture,” added Crane. “Making space for their own furniture is completely acceptable so long as the landlord’s furniture has been stored away safely – but all too often students fail to leave the property the way it was left, throwing up all kinds of problems for the landlord. This is especially true in the case of any broken items; inform your landlord instantly - never leave it to the end of the tenancy.”
Additionally, students should check to see if they have any responsibilities such as maintaining the garden as they may find that they may be charged by their landlord once the tenancy expires.
