Award-winning psychologist Dr. Roger McIntire launches his latest book for parents, Staying Cool and In Control: A Behaviorist’s Guide for Parents, on June 1, 2013. The guide offers practical advice for parents challenged to keep a steady disposition, manage fair discipline, enjoy the job and stay lovingly close to their children.

The parenting review organization Parent Council, Ltd., called Dr. McIntire’s books “Outstanding.” Bookviews Magazine says, “[McIntire] learned his lessons well and passes along his knowledge in a lively and readable book...filled with practical answers for all the common problems.” Dr. McIntire’s books have been published in Germany, Brazil, Korea, Poland and four other countries.

This practical guidebook offers parental solutions and strategies for everyday challenges from eating problems to cell phones and from social problems of pre-schoolers to the swirl of violence and sexual suggestions in a teenager’s television and computer. Familiar vignettes, dialogues, and practical examples fill every chapter.

What should you say to your kids at supper? How should you react to their less thoughtful remarks? Children want to know “Do you like me?” and “Can we talk?” Parents ask, “How can I deal with his tantrums? What about his computer addiction? What can I do about the bullies she faces every school day? How do I handle it when he (or she) gets interested in sex? Alcohol? Drugs?”

“In a family, most attitudes recycle,” says Dr. McIntire, “and most people will not treat your child any better than you do.”

Dr. McIntire, father of three, is professor emeritus of psychology, University of Maryland. He also writes a newspaper column, “Raising Good Kids in Tough Times,” and is a popular speaker and workshop leader. Tips and resources for parents are also offered on his website, parentsuccess.com.

Staying Cool and In Control: A Behaviorist’s Guide for Parents is published by Summit Crossroads Press. It will be available in print (ISBN 978-0-9834049-8-9, $17.95) and e-book editions.
