"Discovering Belize is discovering a world-renowned adventure vacation destination," says Miss Althea Schable, the Reservations Manager at Chabil Mar.

"With activities to suit every adventurer, from sea to land to jungle to Maya, my country is a diverse wonderland. One of the most popular day adventures for our guests is exploring, hiking and swimming at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's first jaguar preserve."

"It is a reservoir for biodiversity. Hundreds of species of plants with exotic leaves and flowers, colorful insects, singing birds, furry mammals, scaly reptiles, and wide-eyed amphibians live in this complex tropical forest community. And to add to the excitement, our guests, with the direction of our local tour guides, swim in the multiple waterfalls and float peacefully on inner tubes down the river."

"This one-of-a-kind reserve started as a result of the jaguar studies conducted in the area by Alan Rabinowitz in 1982 to 1986. Over 128,000 acres of lush jungle are ringed by the spectacular Cockscomb Mountains. Through Dr. Rabinowitz's ecological study, it was observed that the Cockscomb Basin contained the highest density of jaguars ever recorded. Therefore, in 1984, the area was initially declared a forest reserve with a “No Hunting” ordinance to protect the large jaguar population and other wildlife that make this place their home."

"Mark Nolan of the World Wildlife Fund referred to the reserve as a magical place where wonders and diversity are accessible to both the casual and serious visitor," says Miss Schable.

"There is nothing quite like a day trip and tour of Cockscomb. Our guests always return with smiles, stories and photos to share with us all."
