New study demonstrates omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, may boost heart health of smokers – a group with an increased risk of heart problems

While the best course of action for any smoker is to quit, researchers from the University from Edinburgh and the Wythenshawe hospital in the UK and Wellington Hospital in New Zealand, have demonstrated that smokers who took a daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, improved heart health compared to a group that didn’t, in a double-blind, placebo- controlled, crossover trial, long considered the gold standard of clinical study.

The study, published by the journal Heart, showed that a daily omega-3 supplement containing a dose of 2 grams per day, more than doubled a measured indicator of cell function in the cells lining blood vessels compared to a group of smokers that took a placebo. The study also indicated that levels of a blood protein known to dilate blood vessels – thus improving blood flow – were also higher in the group taking the omega-3 supplement over the group that took the placebo.

It is well known that the risk to cardiac health is much higher for cigarette smokers. One of the key indicators in cardio vascular health is the level of a specific blood protein (t-PA) responsible for the breakdown of clots in blood vessels. Smokers produce less t-PA than non-smokers. The study demonstrated that the smokers who took the omega-3 supplement showed increased levels of t-PA compared to the smokers who took the placebo. According to the researchers, this demonstrate for the first time that omega-3 fatty acid supplements boost t-PA release and improve vasomotor function in cigarette smokers.
