Macquarie Telecom to Power Intersect’s Big Data Research with Supercomputer Hosting

Macquarie Telecom (ASX: MAQ), Australia’s number one Managed Hosting and business-only telecommunications company, will host a research-dedicated supercomputer in its Intellicentre 2 data centre as part of a new deal with e-research services organisation Intersect Australia.

The deal will see Intersect operate “Orange”, a SGI High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, out of Intellicentre 2, with Macquarie Telecom providing both high-density co-location and hosting services necessary to power and cool the 30-plus teraflops of processing power offered by the supercomputer. The HPC resources will be used for data-intensive research by multiple Australian universities into fields including genetic sequencing, clean energy production, and simulation of tropical cyclone formations.

Intersect will offer time-sharing of the HPC resources “as a Service”, between different universities, predominantly using the system for “big data crunching”, and providing the fundamental resources for data-intensive projects in 11 major Australian universities including the University of Sydney and University of New South Wales.
