Physical limitations are NOT an excuse for quitting a Spartan Race. You create your own challenges and your own goals.

On May 3, 2013, Spartan Race discusses the experiences of Spartan Race Elite competitor Alexander Nicholas.

Nicholas is the co-owner of EPIC Hybrid Training, a gym and training center in Manhattan. According to the Spartan blog, Nicholas believes that the strength and conditioning programs he designs and completes at EPIC are optimal for preparing for Spartan Races and other obstacle course races or mud runs. “We jump, we crawl, we swing, we sweat, we suffer!” Nicholas exclaims.

Nicholas believes that anyone who puts their mind to it can complete a Spartan Race. He states, “Physical limitations are not an excuse for quitting a Spartan Race. You create your own challenges and your own goals. One person aspires to finish on the podium while another is simply aiming to cross the finish line, but both those people are on the same course and both people are in the same class at EPIC.”

The fact that anyone can scale their own goals within a Spartan Race inspired Nicholas to create a Spartan team for the Citi Field race at his gym. Nicholas explains how his members became more confident in their own abilities after enduring challenging training sessions. “I think the real difference is that we always have fun in what we do. All the exercises and all the hell I put my members through was finally going to be justified at Citi Field. No more 'please stop the burpees!', 'anything but the bear crawl!' or 'This giant jump rope is just unnecessary.' I was building them into Spartan assassins and they didn’t have a clue! After the race, the members realized that every extra burpee, Sandbell smash, and inverted plank mattered, and was worth it!”

Nicholas also notes the camaraderie and spirit displayed by his team members at the race. “If someone couldn’t get over the higher walls, everyone stopped and helped them over. It was an amazing experience to take part in and the energy in our gym has definitely changed for the better since. A greater sense of camaraderie is in the atmosphere here and new and old members alike are benefiting!”

Spartan Race, voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, is the world’s leading obstacle race series and the first of its kind to have global rankings. Spartan Race is a timed event series featuring races at three escalating distances in locations worldwide that culminate in a World Championship Finale with cash and prizes for the champions. While featuring competitive elite heats, Spartan Races are for athletes of all levels and abilities and are geared towards ripping people off their couches and into the outdoors.
