Hoping to treat patients with minor emergencies in a more efficient manner, Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County has expanded its emergency department to include a dedicated area called PromptCare.
Encompassing eight treatment rooms, PromptCare gives patients quicker access to care for non- life-threatening illnesses and injuries and helps to alleviate long wait times at the community hospital’s busy emergency department.
“We have experienced significant increases in our emergency room volume, with more than 40,000 visits each year. As a result, we have outgrown the capacity of the department,” said Mark Nessel, Lourdes Health System Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Our goal is to improve treatment time for our emergency patients, with minor injuries cared for in a more private, comfortable environment.”
The emergency department’s triage nurse will continue to evaluate incoming patients. Patients with less-serious medical problems, such as minor cuts, burns and animal bites, strains and sprains, as well as sore throats, will be treated at PromptCare, said Larry Segal, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.
“Urgent care clinics are limited in their services,” said Dr. Segal. “We provide a higher level of care. If your condition worsens or you need tests, the full resources of the hospital are right there.”
PromptCare at Lourdes also offers treating physicians an opportunity to refer patients who do not have regular healthcare providers to Lourdes doctors and services, thus establishing a continuum of care.
Dr. Segal noted that with less-serious conditions being treated at PromptCare, it is anticipated that the wait time in the emergency room will decrease. In addition, staff can spend more time with higher-acuity patients, which should speed admission to the hospital.
“You shouldn’t have to spend three or four hours in the emergency room,” said Nessel. “Our aim is to treat these minor emergencies and discharge the patient within 60 minutes.”
PromptCare at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County is located at 218 A Sunset Road in Willingboro, New Jersey. The facility is easily accessible from Route 130 and Interstate 295. No appointment is needed.
