Canadian Healthy Vending announces an expansion of their Max Menu program which allows users at vending machines to view products and educate themselves about the ingredients and nutritional content of products. Every machine is registered in the program and consumers are able to search for items that meet their tastes and nutritional requirements online. When they have decided on which items they would like to see stocked in their vending machine, they can request the items directly from that machine’s operator.
The Max machine, with its high resolution 15 inch monitor and the Max Menu program, solves a problem that has limited the responsiveness of vending machine operators to consumer’s changing demands. As health consciousness and tastes have changed, users have discovered that the choices offered at vending machines have not evolved with them. Consumers who increasingly rely on nutritional labels to choose the food they eat, discover that this tool is largely unavailable to them. Although nutritional labelling is required on all products, that information is inaccessible behind the closed door of a vending machine. Recent research shows that up to 70% of Canadian consumers consider food labels an important source of nutritional information with nearly 60% of consumers reporting they always or usually read the labels on product according to Health Canada. This is no easy feat, as there are over 1000 healthy products that operators can draw on to fill their machines. Armed with the nutritional facts, consumers can use tools like the Health Canada’s % Daily Value and other Interactive tools to compare and choose the right products and help to place their daily snacking in context with their nutritional goals.
