The worry of clinical negligence is entirely unwelcome, but in the case of an elderly parent, they may be unable to deal with such matters alone. Recently, the BBC reported on the death of Rita Smith, an elderly woman who died after her bedsores became infected--a condition that could have easily been avoided.

Often a delayed diagnosis or an error in treatment may not just hinder recovery, but worsen the original condition or create new symptoms.

Caring for an elderly parent means being on hand for not just everyday chores, but for when serious issues arise. A visit to hospital can become fraught with stress, with the logistics of travel, waiting times and overnight stays to consider. Understandably, the additional worry of clinical negligence is entirely unwelcome, but in the case of an elderly parent, they may be unable to deal with such matters alone.

On the 8th April 2013, the BBC reported on the death of Rita Smith, an elderly woman who died of a blood infection from infected bed sores (1). According to the BBC, in their article "Settlement Agreed After Bed Sores Death in Warwickshire", a visiting GP had previously noted Mrs Smith had pressure sores and recommended she be turned every two hours. This level of care was not adhered to, culminating in the pressure sore infection that caused her death (1).

Asons Executive, Thomas Fairclough, commented on the report:

“Medical negligence can be devastating to the individual, but seeing it inflicted on someone elderly, in a vulnerable position, can be both unimaginable and frustrating.

Often a delayed diagnosis or an error in treatment may not just hinder recovery, but worsen the original condition or create new symptoms."

As with the death of Mrs Smith, bed or pressure sores can be a problem during hospital stays for the elderly. Developing where bony areas remain under extended pressure, bed sores are common when patients lie in the same position for long periods of time. The pressure inflicted reduces blood flow, causing tissue damage and cell death; resulting in open wounds prone to infection (2). Elderly patients who are unable to move without assistance are in danger of developing pressure sores, which are easily prevented by a medical professional adjusting their position as necessary (2).

While medical care in the UK is usually of a very high standard, unfortunately government cuts have meant that NHS staff are being forced to achieve more with less. In a bid to save money and become more efficient, medical judgments can be rushed and mistakes can be made, to the detriment of the patient.

In the event that you consider a parent to have been subject to clinical negligence, you must seek legal advice as quickly as possible. Taking action can prevent the same situation from reoccurring, helping others to avoid injury in future.

If your parent has suffered as a result of misdiagnosis, non-treatment, pressures sores or even through the administration of the wrong treatment, they may be able to make a claim for compensation.
