Business leaders regularly delete emails without opening them, but are willing to invest their time in reading relevant and well-crafted messages, a Find the Edge article that was published earlier today says.
Written by business coach Griselda Togobo, the article gives marketers an insight into the mind-set of the small business leaders who receive their messages, and provides advice on how to get their messages across most effectively.
Togobo said: "I receive a lot of emails. Some, I love and look forward to, but most just get deleted without even being read.
"If I’m deleting your emails, chances are every other small business owner is as well.
"The emails that I do open, read, and file away are the ones that grab my attention by promising to be entertaining, educational, shocking or enlightening. The best ones actually deliver on that promise."
Togobo provides six tips that can present business leaders from immediately hitting "delete." These include thinking about length, making emails relevant to the recipient, and using effective subject lines.
She also explains the need to personalise emails to the recipients before sending them out.
She said: "Generic emails are nothing more than broadcasts – one-way conversations that don’t expect me, the subscriber, to have anything to say or contribute.
"These businesses need to be using their emails as an opportunity to engage with subscribers. Using every email to sing your own praises, or sell your products and services, gets tiring very quickly."
