A new coin issued to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Dambusters' Raid has been revealed. Officially licensed with the RAF, this new £5 coin will be available from The Westminster Collection from 1st May 2013 in time to mark the anniversary on 16th/17th May.
The Dambusters' Raid remains one of the most significant chapters in RAF history. 617 Squadron was formed on 21 March 1943 for the special task of breaching major dams in Germany using Barnes Wallis' ‘bouncing bomb’, flying modified Lancaster B IIIs. After weeks of planning, nineteen aircraft took off on 16th May under the command of Wing Commander G P Gibson DSO DFC, attacking and successfully breaching the Möhne and Eder Dams. It is now remembered as one of the great tactical victories for the Allies during WWII.
This new officially licensed coin, is the perfect way to honour all those who took part in this historic event. Squadron Leader, John McFall said, “the Dambusters’ Raid represents the combination of engineering excellence and innovation coupled with expert airmanship, tenacity, bravery and sacrifice. We are thrilled to have worked with The Westminster Collection to produce a fantastic coin which is issued to mark the 70th anniversary."
Produced under the expert guidance of the RAF and issued by Guernsey, the design features the modified Avro Lancaster B IIIs flying over the breached dam. The obverse features the esteemed Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM The Queen.
