Businesspeople Failing to Exploit the Value of their LinkedIn Profiles, New Find the Edge Expert Panellist Says

Businesspeople make a variety of simple mistakes when using LinkedIn that can cost them future clients and profits, a Find the Edge article - published earlier today - has said.

LinkedIn is an incredibly versatile tool that – used in the right way – can offer all kinds of fantastic benefits.

Using LinkedIn inefficiently is costing businesspeople both clients and money, according to Find the Edge expert panellist Mark Williams.

He uses a new article on the business website to identify five common mistakes businesspeople make when using LinkedIn.

He said: 'LinkedIn is an incredibly versatile tool that – used in the right way – can offer all kinds of fantastic benefits.

'Unfortunately, most people don’t understand how to use it properly, and some even damage their reputation with it.'

Williams identifies the errors, and then explains why these jeopardise the chances of guilty individuals gaining extra business, and being able to network effectively.

One common error is attempting to sell at every opportunity. He said: 'Direct selling makes you look desperate and unprofessional.

'Focus your time on LinkedIn raising your profile, building better relationships, networking effectively and helping others. You’ll find that the new business comes to you in time.'

He also warns against immediately reciprocating recommendations, and failing to invest enough time into completing a profile.

Williams' final tip is relevant for anyone looking to sell, either online or offline.

He said: 'One of the earliest lessons I learnt in sales and communications was that I had two ears and one mouth for a reason, and that it was essential to focus on listening more than speaking (never easy for me!).

'The key to success on LinkedIn is to engage with others. It is much easier to do this by reading what others have written – and then replying/commenting – than it is to continually broadcast your own words.'
