This is the fourth season the American Modified Series has run Open Wheel Modified racing at various dirt tracks in Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois. The series sanctions its events under UMP DirtCar Modified rules. Drivers in the American Modified Series can earn points toward an AMS series title as well as national points toward the UMP DirtCar Modified National Championship.
“Since it is so closely allied with UMP DirtCar Modified, the American Modified Series is a perfect fit for us,” said Jim Greenleaf, Summit Racing Motorsports and Events Manager. “It gives Summit Racing a chance to help out more of the racers that are the backbone of dirt racing.”
Summit Racing Equipment has been involved with the UMP DirtCar since 2011. It sponsors the Summit Racing Modified Nationals for the UMP DirtCar Modified division that coincides with the UMP Super Late Model Summernationals Tour.
Summit Racing will also sponsor the Summit Racing Equipment Heat Race One at each American Modified Series event. The company will award gift cards for the top finishers in each of those heats, and will contribute to the tour’s series points fund.
Dirt Open Wheel Modified cars feature a tubular chassis from the firewall back, but use a stock front clip from a passenger vehicle. The cars are required to weigh 2,400 pounds with the driver, and run Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler V8s making upwards of 700 horsepower at over 8,000 RPM.
The Summit Racing Equipment American Modified Series kicked off its 2013 racing season April 13 with the tour’s first-ever visit to Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tennessee.
