Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) May 09, 2013
Smartcomm, LLC specializes in the acquisition and development of spectrum assets in the U.S. Any company that works closely with the FCC in the wireless telecommunications industry recognizes the importance of staying abreast of any staffing changes at the FCC. “It was with great enthusiasm that we learned of President Obama’s decision to nominate Mr. Tom Wheeler to be the new FCC Chairman,” says Smartcomm Vice President, Shannon Downs. “We believe him to be a great candidate that can lead the FCC effectively.” Until Mr. Wheeler can be confirmed by the Senate, the FCC will be in the capable hands of Commissioner Mignon Clyburn who will act as interim chairperson. Ms. Clyburn is currently serving her second term at the FCC and has been described as a champion of consumers.
A Seasoned Industry Veteran
Mr. Wheeler seems to have the depth of experience necessary to lead the agency through the significant challenges ahead, such as the anticipated broadcast spectrum auctions, network neutrality, and broadband expansion. He has been involved in the telecommunications industry for more than 30 years. He was president of the National Cable Television Association from 1979 to 1984 and also held the position of CEO from 1992 to 2004 for Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. Following the 2008 presidential election, Mr. Wheeler served on the Obama-Biden Transition Project’s Agency Review Working Group which was in charge of transitions for the science, technology, space and arts agencies. And in addition he has served on a variety of governmental advisory boards during the Obama administration.
Finally, Mr. Wheeler has spent many years in the private sector working within the telecommunications industry. This gives Mr. Wheeler a well-rounded and diverse insight into the challenges and possibilities that exist within the telecommunications industry. He has founded multiple companies offering cable, wireless and video communications services. He has been an integral part of Core Capital Partners, a Washington D.C.-based venture capital firm, since 2005. Core Capital’s focus has been, in part, on dynamic and evolving opportunities being created by trends in information technology.
Forging The Future
Smartcomm believes a strong leader is needed at the FCC as we head into the future. The new chairman will be tasked with crossing partisan lines to affect public policy and implement change. Mr. Wheeler’s years of business experience along with his keen understanding of the telecommunications industry and government policy will be great assets to him as he begins his tenure at the Federal Communications Commission.
“All of us here at Smartcomm are very excited about the nomination of Mr. Wheeler; he is a highly qualified candidate with both public and private sector experience,” continued Ms. Downs . “We are encouraged by his past role in helping small businesses in the telecommunications industry. We offer our most sincere congratulations to Mr. Wheeler and wish him the very best of luck.”
