On May 11, Bay Fastening Systems applauds the efforts of the Rudins, a New York real estate family, for providing a green facelift to several NYC post-war residential buildings that it owns.

According to a Crain’s article, white brick apartment buildings are often known as “white elephants.” However, these buildings are not in the best of shape. The article goes on to state, “postwar-era buildings have become problem properties of another sort in recent years as their bricks have cracked and grayed, and the mortar between them has given way. The Rudins, the New York real estate family that built a healthy chunk of their empire on just such properties think they might have come up with a fix for their herd of such buildings.”

The plan involves installing a rain screen around the building to improve physical appearance, energy efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs. The first building to receive the rain screen is located at 215 E. 68th Street. The installation process took over two years to complete.

The article explains the rain screens’ “biggest benefit is from the fact that the facade no longer contacts the building. The air gap in between actually forces rain and condensation out through the panels, helping insulate the building and prevent water penetration, which is a chronic problem with bricks.”

Bay Fastening Systems, a distributor of many types of fasteners including the pop rivet, applauds the move to improve the outside façade of white elephant buildings in New York City. “We support construction projects that improve the energy efficiency of buildings, and we applaud the efforts of the Rudins,” says Mellissa Finnell.
