This Spring Europe Converges on Detroit for a celebration of Europe and America with a Detroit flavor.

From May 4th to June 20th Alliance Francaise/the French Institute of Michigan along with the European Union Delegation to the United States, the Detroit Institute of Arts, U of D Mercy, and several European Chambers of commerce and consulates will be sponsoring various events in and around the Detroit Metro area celebrating the European-American connection. Events will include wine tastings, free guided tours of the European Art Collection at the DIA, panel discussions with delegates from the E.U., film screenings, golf and petanque outings, and the grand celebration on May 30th which will feature a lecture by an astronaut from the European Space Agency. Many of the events are free and open to the public; others require an admission fee.

The events and their dates are listed below.

Thursday May 9th—Euro Wine
A sampling of various European wines. 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Admission: 21+ event, $25/person + Michigan sales tax 6% Plum Market, Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield.

Friday May 10th—Euro Art
A free guided tour of the visiting European Art Collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). 1:00 to 7:15 pm; six tours, lasting 1 hour 15 minutes each. Prentis Court at the DIA, 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit. Free and open to the public.

Friday May 17th—European Delegate visit
A panel discussion about Europe, touching upon co-op jobs and/or employment outside the US. Mrs. Eva Horelova, Deputy Head of Press and Public Diplomacy at the Delegation and Deputy Delegation Spokesperson, and Mrs. Betina Schlossberg, immigration lawyer and board member of the Dante Alighieri Society will be there to offer their insight. 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Architecture building, University of Detroit Mercy, 4001 W. McNichols Road, Detroit. Free and open to the public.

Saturday May 18th—Euro 313 Detroit (a Detroit – Europe link)
Dance and celebrate Europe. 8:00 pm to 2:00 am the next day. Rust Belt Market, 22801 Woodward Ave, Ferndale, MI. $45 per person, $80 per couple.

Thursday May 30th—Euro American Celebration
A grand culmination of all Euro-American events and participants, including speakers, cultural activities and folk dances. Cocktail and dinner reception. Special guests: Leopold Eyharts, Astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Michigan’s Former Lieutenant Governor John D. Cherry. Cranbrook Science Museum, 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills. $45 per person.

Friday, May 31st—Euro Movies
Presenting LAUGH IN EUROPE. The 4TH Euro channel short film tour guides audience through the screening of a series of short films set in Europe. The films will be shown in their original languages with English subtitles. Detroit Film Theater, 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit.

Monday June 3rd—Euro Golf
19th Annual Swedish American Chamber of Commerce-Detroit Golf International-Scalawags Golf Club, Chesterfield

Sunday June 8th—Euro Petanque, Royal Oak

Thursday June 20th—Euro Chambers of Commerce: Wine Tasting at the Lark Coordinated by the French-American Chamber of Commerce. Location: The Lark, West Bloomfield.
