Brooklyn, New York (PRWEB) May 08, 2013
May is better known for Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, but it’s also the chosen month for National Nurses Week, observed May 6 to May 12.
The History of Nurses Week: National Nurses Week is an annual event, established in the United States by President Richard Nixon in 1974. The final day, May 12, is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. As of 2011, about 2.1 million individuals were employed as nurses in the United States, with a female to male ratio of approximately 20:1. Nursing has long been considered an extremely high stress job, due to long hours, heavy physical labor, and the emotional toll from caring for very ill or difficult patients.
Nursing Today: In recent years the U.S. has been facing a significant shortage in nurses, and that shortage is expected to increase over the next few years as older nurses enter retirement age. Many hospitals are now establishing “earn as you learn” programs, in which individuals interested in becoming nurses but are unable to afford to attend nursing school full-time are able to participate in work-study programs.
Showing Appreciation: Medex Supply is announcing a special coupon in honor of National Nurses Week. The coupon code is nurse7, and will take 7% off almost every item in Medex Supply’s catalog. This includes such popular nursing care items as the ADC Adlite penlight and the Littmann Classic II stethoscope, as well as items purchased in bulk, such as examination gloves and protective shoe covers.
“We really can’t show enough gratitude for nurses and the tremendous amount of work they do,” said Rivkah Lebovic, general manager of Medex Supply. “The coupon is a small gesture that we help will draw attention to their invaluable service.”
