Dr. Charles Burliss is bringing the new FDA cleared laser protocol to his Southern New Hampshire patients. The new protocol, called the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), is a periodontal disease treatment method designed to efficiently remove diseased gum tissue.

As a Salem, NH periodontist, he has been in private practice for 20 years. Dr. Burliss became certified on the new LANAP procedure in September 2012. He offers this service to patients as an alternative to traditional periodontal disease treatment. Only a very small percentage of dental professionals in the United States have been trained on this advanced / alternative method for treating gum disease.

In November of 2012, the results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) coordinated by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) were released for 2009 and 2010. The results of this survey suggest startling data that nearly 50 percent of adults over age 30 and 70 percent over age 65 in the US, representing 64.7 million people; suffer from some form of periodontitis. Almost 40 percent of adults over age 30 have moderate to severe periodontitis!

Many have not sought treatment for various reasons, the most common reason being a fear of traditional treatment methods that use scalpels and sutures. With LANAP, eradication of the disease can occur with less bleeding, pain or discomfort, as well as a shorter down time for patients. Patients who allow gum disease to progress without periodontal disease treatment will usually have major dental issues that could lead to loss of teeth. Additionally, these patients are more likely to be diagnosed with debilitating medical illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, coronary artery disease and diabetes, according to scientific studies.

Understanding this periodontal disease treatment may help some patients decide it is time to seek treatment. With LANAP, Dr. Burliss examines the patient to determine whether he or she is a good candidate for the procedure. The periodontal pockets are then measured, and the PerioLase MVP-7 laser is utilized to remove bacteria and gum tissue that has been affected by periodontal disease. The healthy tissue and bone are not harmed by the FDA cleared laser. In fact, the bone and surrounding tissue is stimulated by the laser to regenerate and provide new attachment and support to the tooth and jaw. No scalpel is needed because the laser is up to 95 percent effective in removing the diseased tissue.

Patients undergoing LANAP have reported minimal discomfort or pain. Many patients report minimal post-operative discomfort the evening of the procedure and are able to return to work the next day. Periodontal disease treatment is an important component of oral and systemic health. The public health implications of the above study are alarming and clear. On a personal level, it should be a wake-up call to each individual to get healthy with appropriate treatment. Remember, periodontal health is part and parcel to overall systemic health.

Healthy gums do not bleed, therefore, if yours do, then seek treatment. As a trained periodontist, Dr. Burliss is uniquely qualified to treat all forms of periodontal disease, particularly the moderate and severe forms. Our office welcomes all patients, even if you do not have a referral or a dentist. People interested in learning more about gum disease, LANAP and dental implants can find information at
