The challenge in providing BLF was about getting the right information to the right phones no matter where they are connected to the cloud.
New York, New York (PRWEB) May 07, 2013
Hosted Business VoIP provider OnSIP recently announced the addition of Busy Lamp Field (BLF) support to the service’s feature set, now enabling employees a birds-eye view of their coworkers on the phone, regardless of location or VoIP phone used (patent pending). With this engineering feat, OnSIP will improve work day efficiency for receptionists and managers with remote or on-the-go teams.
Both a Panasonic Preferred Hosted SIP provider and Polycom Field Verified Partner, OnSIP is a leading provider of hosted PBX services to small and medium sized businesses. As “hosted VoIP and UC services revenue grew 17% in 2012 from 2011, the most in any segment” (Infonetics), providers race to combine both the value and flexibility of a hosted service with the traditional feature set offered in an on-premise phone system, despite vastly different technologies and architectures. To that end, OnSIP has made a leap forward with BLF.
“I thought it would not be possible," stated Christopher Bardos, CEO of BCSI, an IT Services Company. “There are some pretty daunting technical hurdles to overcome in developing a solution like this in a cloud architecture and when I heard that OnSIP came out with BLF, I was thrilled. My customers constantly ask why they cannot see their colleagues’ phone status and now, I can finally tell them they can – that’s the beauty of VoIP and OnSIP. This is one of the cleanest and most cost-effective solutions in the market.”
The term Busy Lamp Field refers to the set of lights on a phone, or phone sidecar that indicate which other phones on a phone system are in use (i.e. when coworkers are on the phone). This phone feature has been traditionally used by employees who answer and direct calls on an on-premise phone system, but it is challenging for a hosted VoIP service provider with geographically distributed systems to support.
In an on-premise phone system, all the phones in business are directly connected to the office’s Private Branch Exchange (PBX) via physical wires, a setup that allows the PBX to monitor all the phones’ activities; all calls the phones make and receive are after all mediated by that single piece of equipment.
“This 'centralized monolithic' architecture of traditional PBX is in stark contrast to OnSIP's Cloud based architecture,” said John Riordan, CTO of OnSIP. “OnSIP is distributed across the Internet, allowing phones to utilize various SIP systems based on geography and availability. The challenge in providing BLF was about getting the right information to the right phones no matter where they are connected to the cloud.”
OnSIP met this challenge with a unique BLF implementation that runs on their geographically distributed SIP platform. Complete with an easy-to-use admin interface to set up the button assignments, OnSIP BLF works with all phones that support a set of SIP RFCs and has been verified with Panasonic, Polycom, Cisco SPA, and Grandstream phones. OnSIP BLF allows phones within the same organization to subscribe to each other’s real-time event notifications – e.g. when the phone rings, is on a call, or hangs up a call — regardless of the phones’ location and which OnSIP servers they utilize for registrar and proxy services (patent-pending).
Having helped over 20,000 customers, OnSIP is a leading provider of hosted PBX service to small and medium-sized businesses. OnSIP customers enjoy the benefits of a business class phone system, without the traditional high cost, burden, and inflexibility. For more information, visit http://www.onsip.com.
