Inaugural James L. Mulshine, M.D. Leadership Award Given for Healton's Extraordinary Work

The Prevent Cancer Foundation is proud to announce Cheryl G. Healton, DrPH, as the first recipient of the James L. Mulshine, M.D., Leadership Award at the 2013 Lung Cancer Workshop X, held in Bethesda, Md. on May 2. The award recognizes Healton’s over 25 years of tireless work in public health, specifically on tobacco control. A former smoker herself, Dr. Healton’s first-hand understanding of addiction has driven her passion to find real-world solutions to smoking cessation.

Healton also delivered the opening plenary address at the Lung Cancer Workshop X: Application of Quantitative CT Imaging to Early Lung Cancer Management: Accelerating Progress. The annual workshop brings together oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, along with representatives of federal agencies and the pharmaceutical and diagnostic imaging industries, to explore the use of spiral CT scanning as a tool for evaluating response to new therapies more rapidly and accurately. The value of these workshops to cancer research in the leading cancer killer of Americans cannot be overestimated.

“We are pleased to honor Dr. Healton for her extraordinary work in tobacco control, as well as Dr. Mulshine for his contributions to the field of lung cancer,” said Prevent Cancer Foundation President and Founder Carolyn Aldigé.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation Lung Cancer Workshops focus on driving innovation and broad cross-disciplinary inclusion. The annual workshops have helped developed several groundbreaking image databases such as the National Cancer Institute RIDER Database, The Prevent Cancer Foundation-Cornell University Database and the Lung Cancer Alliance Patient-donated Database (Give-A-Scan). These databases include collections of different types of image files and these diverse resources are critical in the development of advanced lung cancer imaging specifically and have advanced the field of cancer research more generally
