Two Philadelphia-area High School Students Will Each Receive An $8,000 Scholarship Towards A College Education

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, The R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund, a local fund started by former Urban League of Philadelphia president, Robert W. Sorrell, will host a reception awarding high school students, Chase Roberts and Jazmin Jervis, with an $8,000 scholarship each, towards a college education. This scholarship will follow Mr. Roberts and Ms. Jervis throughout their studies and will be granted annually over a four-year period. More than 65 contributors, supporters, friends, and guests are expected to attend. The event is sponsored and hosted, in part, by Independence Blue Cross and Golf Outing.

Both Mr. Roberts, senior, Cheltenham High School, and Ms. Jervis, senior, Abington High School, were awarded the scholarship, in part, due to their volunteer activities. Mr. Roberts, an award-winning poet and classically trained pianist, donates his time twice a week at Chestnut Hill Library and mentors children at science workshops held at the Franklin Institute. Ms. Jervis, member of The National Honor Society, feeds the homeless at various shelters throughout Philadelphia and motivates young, African-American women through the organization I’m A Girl Intelligent Nobel and Educated (IMAGINE), where she currently serves as president.

The R.W. Sorrell Scholarship was created to promote and support higher education and achievement for minority students and disadvantaged youth, who not only excel in the classroom, but also in community leadership activities. Robert W. Sorrell, founder and president, The R.W. Scholarship, will present the award.
