Pioneer humanitarian Cameron Sinclair to speak to volunteers from AEC Cares and Reed Construction Data at Blitz Build event for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless on June 19.

“We hope [Cameron Sinclair's] success with Architecture for Humanity will galvanize members of the building and design community to get involved and join our efforts to build solutions that last for this community.”

Cameron Sinclair, co-founder and ‘chief eternal optimist’ of Architecture for Humanity, has signed on to speak at the upcoming AEC Cares blitz build event to help the homeless. The one-day event brings together a team of volunteers from across the U.S. — architects, contractors, manufacturers, retailers and industry professionals from Reed, the AIA and Hanley Wood — who are working to make a difference in the Denver community. The event takes place on June 19.

Like Sinclair’s Architecture for Humanity, AEC Cares is made up of members of the architectural, engineering and construction industries who want to create positive change for communities in need. AEC Cares selects a new project every year and works to bring together the needed design teams, funding and building product donations. This year, the group is renovating a historic Denver building, a Coalition property that provides comfortable housing and health care to disabled vets and homeless men and women who have nowhere else to turn.

“Having Cameron Sinclair attend our ‘projectDenver’ event is an honor,” stated Iain Melville, CEO, Reed Construction Data and Board President, AEC Cares. “We hope his extraordinary success with Architecture for Humanity will galvanize members of the building and design community to get involved and join our efforts to build solutions that last for this community.”

Cameron Sinclair, himself an architect, started Architecture for Humanity in 1999 after witnessing the unquestionable need for the community to come together and make a change. Voted one of Fortune Magazine’s seven people changing the world for the better, Sinclair has lead projects throughout the world, including the Tsunami in Japan and Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. In 2011, President Obama asked him to serve on the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid (ACVFA).

Sinclair will speak at the luncheon on the day of the June 19 event, when hundreds of volunteers will roll up their sleeves at the Denver Beacon Place facility to complete the renovation and transform the community areas of the property into safe, healing environments.

“Many of our volunteers are in town for the 2013 AIA National Convention, but our design team has been working in Denver for many months,” stated Iain Melville. “We are indebted to Path21 Architecture, the project’s architect; Landwise, the landscape architect; and Layton Construction, the general contractor, who have been working tirelessly to make this project a success.”

The Beacon Place project in Denver is AEC Cares’ third annual event. AEC Cares continues to seek sponsors and building product donations to help restore Beacon Place and support the Coalition’s efforts to resolve homelessness in Colorado.
