The San Diego Chargers have agreed to a contract with free agent rookie quarterback Mike Hermann. Hermann reigns from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a division III school in New York. The 6’5, 250 pound quarterback was a two time Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all conference quarterback. As a senior, he completed 178 of 296 for 2,366 yards with 23 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Hermann will be the only quarterback prospect at the Chargers minicamp, or any other in the NFL, to come out of RPI. The school is generally known for sending out top-notch engineers, not NFL quarterbacks. If Hermann were to make the team, he would be the first NFL player to come out of RPI, which has been playing football since 1886. In his pro day workout Hermann ran a 4.64 40 and benched 225 20 times. Mike Hermann said that his focus has shifted. He is hoping for a chance for something better. “It is going to be overwhelming, I’m sure, but it will also be exciting,” he quotes. “I’m ready to perform. I’m ready to prove that even though I’m from a small school I can compete on a higher level. Division III is only a number. If you are good enough, they will find you.” http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/zone-rpi-hermann-survives-avusive-father-nfl-shot-article-1.1335208
