Artists and visitors alike are invited to take part in a series of Plein Air Paint Out events in conjunction with a new month-long creative arts event called Create! Eugene set for August 2013.
The Create! Eugene Plein Air Paint Out, August 15-25, 2013, will feature hands-on workshops, demonstrations, competitions and a plein air gallery reception and show focused on the art of painting outdoors. Events and workshops are open to the public and artists of all abilities.
Plein Air Workshops - August 15-25, 2013
Plein air painters, specializing in various forms and mediums, will offer a series of workshops designed to educate and engage artists of all skill levels. Artists can register to both conduct a workshop and/or take a workshop at various locations in and around Eugene. Additionally, art organizations with existing workshops planned for the month of August are encouraged to post their offerings on Create! Eugene’s website at http://www.CreateEugene.org. Listing with Create! Eugene includes opportunities for instruction in workshop development, marketing assistance, space rental, and opportunities to be included in feature stories, artists’ interviews, and other related promotions.
Artists are invited to participate in a one-day Create! Eugene Plein Air Paint Out Competition. Artists who register for the competition at the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) Gallery are invited to paint a plein air landscape or cityscape in or around Eugene and enter their completed artwork later that day at Kesey Square. Contest submissions will go on display in Eugene’s Kesey Square and winners will be announced during Eugene’s Summer in the City—Downtown: Art Alfresco & Plein Air Showcase. Artists will be competing for $5,000 in cash and prizes and the opportunity to display and sell their art at a reception and show at the DIVA Gallery in downtown Eugene from August 23 – 31, 2013. Plein air fine artist Eric Jacobsen of Portland will serve as the competition’s juror. A youth competition, for painters 17 years and under, will also be held in conjunction with the Plein Air Paint Out. The youth judge will be well-known, Eugene artist Ellen Gabehart.
Summer in the City—Downtown: Art Alfresco & Plein Air Showcase – August 21, 2013
A special evening will be dedicated to the Create! Eugene Plein Air Paint Out and Competition as part of the City of Eugene’s Summer in the City event series. On August 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., artworks created earlier in the day for the Plein Air Paint Out Competition will be on display in Kesey Square. The public is welcome to meet the artists and watch plein air painting demonstrations. Kids can make and take home projects created at a do-it-yourself art station. The event will also feature live music by Soul Jazz and a wine bar. Winners of the Plein Air Paint Out Competition will be announced toward the end of the evenings’ activities and cash and prizes will be awarded. Kesey Square is located at Willamette and Broadway Streets in downtown Eugene.
Artist Reception and Show at DIVA Gallery – August 23-31
Entries from the Plein Air Paint Out Competition will be on display during an artist reception and show at the DIVA Gallery. The reception will be held on Friday, August 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. The art show will follow August 24 and August 29 – 31, from 1 to 5 p.m., during regular gallery hours. DIVA is located at 280 W. Broadway in downtown Eugene.
Win a Plein Air Workshop and Stay – May 1-July 15
Artists are invited to participate in a special Plein Air Paint Out Facebook Competition starting May 8, 2013. Participants will have a chance to win a two-day plein air workshop with artists Eric Jacobsen of Portland and one-night’s lodging at the Eugene Hilton.
