We are confident that Got Your 6 can continue to engage the American public to view our returning veterans and their families as leaders and civic assets.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the national veteran campaign Got Your 6. The campaign unites more than two dozen veteran-focused nonprofits with the leading entertainment studios, networks, and agencies in Hollywood to benefit tens of thousands of veterans and military families in communities across the country.

Launched one year ago today, the Got Your 6 campaign seeks to change the conversation in America around veterans and military families such that they are perceived as assets and leaders in their communities. The campaign focuses on six areas critical to successful reintegration: jobs, housing, education, family, health, and leadership. Leveraging resources contributed by the entertainment industry, Got Your 6 magnifies the reach and impact of each organization, which in turn creates measurable, meaningful benefits for the hundreds of thousands of veterans and military families they serve nationwide. The campaign’s accomplishments have been bolstered by the ongoing support of entertainment community and financial industry leader Wells Fargo, along with national activation partner Goodwill Industries and national retailer Macy’s.

“We are proud of the substantial work accomplished by our nonprofit partners and humbled by the willingness and engagement of the entertainment industry in making this past year a success,” said Chris Marvin, managing director of Got Your 6. “With more than one-million service members returning to civilian life over the next three to five years, our journey is not over. We are confident that Got Your 6 can continue to engage the American public to view our returning veterans and their families as leaders and civic assets.”

At its launch, Got Your 6 developed a set of measurable goals in each category, and registered them with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). Top veteran nonprofits specializing in jobs, housing, education, family, health and leadership have signed on to these pledges, and the majority have already had great success in the first year of the campaign. Organizations such as Student Veterans of America, Pat Tillman Foundation, 100,000 Homes, Team Rubicon and Hiring our Heroes have dramatically increased their reach and influence as a direct result of their involvement in Got Your 6.

The progress and milestones of the campaign are many, but some of the highlights to date include:

Pillar    Accomplishments

Jobs - Hiring our Heroes secured over 800 pledges from business to hire 200,000 veterans and more than 93,000 hires have already been confirmed this year.

Education - The Pat Tillman Foundation and Student Veterans of America have collected over 105 pledges from colleges and universities committing to implement and/or enhance resources, programs and policies to support student veterans in a goal of attaining 500 by June 2014.

Housing - 100,000 Homes Campaign and their community partners were able to house over 14,000 chronically homeless veterans in less than a year and have now doubled their commitment with Got Your 6 to help get veterans off the street and back into communities nationwide.

Leadership     - Over 1.5 million hours of volunteer service have been completed through our leadership teams The Mission Continues, Team Rubicon and The 6th Branch.

Family - The Military Child Education Coalition has trained over 46,000 teachers and Blue Star Families is planning to release an e-book on military family reintegration in June in efforts to provide reintegration tools and training to 300,000 military families and 100,000 school educators by December 2014.

Health - Give an Hour will host a major summit in June to kick off its formal strategy to engage and educate 100,000 graduate students in mental health disciplines on the unique issues of veterans and military families.

The ongoing support of the entertainment industry began with the launch of a star-studded PSA full of top Hollywood celebrities, but the entertainment industry has done more than just provide access to superstars. The industry has played an important role in achieving each of the campaign’s milestones during the last year by fostering relationships, partnerships and other opportunities for veteran service organizations, campaigns and nonprofits to magnify their reach and impact, including:

  •     Finding a funding/technology partner to support an app to help end veteran homelessness
  •     Providing accurate veteran messaging to primetime broadcast programming to support a hot button issue
  •     Connecting celebrities to act as spokespeople or lend a hand during a service/awareness project or fundraising event

Got Your 6 managing director, Chris Marvin is a former Army Blackhawk pilot who survived a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, endured a long rehab, and went on to receive his MBA from The Wharton School. However, as many other veterans do, Chris felt that there was still more that he could contribute to his country. Using his experience, service, and education, he took a fresh approach to the veteran service organization sector when he worked to help create the Got Your 6 campaign, whereby top organizations with the common goals and philosophies can work together to serve and empower veterans in a holistic way spotlighting veterans as civic assets, not liabilities.
